Ice Water For The Soul

For all those Christians out there who are procrastinating in reading their Bibles I've got some friendly words of advice, learned form past experience.

Are you feeling drained?  Do you feel stuck in a rut? Like everything you are are doing has no purpose whatsoever?

Well maybe not, but I've felt like this many times.  I hardly learn from my own mistakes, but usually I try to fill this emptiness with all sorts of things in my life.  I may work out harder at the gym, run an extra mile, play my guitar a little more, go out and attempt to have an adventure, or spend longer hours at work.  These things temporarily work to satisfy my drained and empty soul, but fade away quickly.

The only cure in the entire world to take away this "empty" feeling inside for me is reading God's Word.  It is "Ice Water for the Soul"!

Last night before I went to bed I spent about an hour in the Word and really aloud myself to take the time to read it carefully and let my soul soak it all up.  Often I find myself rushing through my quiet times, and I know afterwards that I got nothing out of it.

I like to think of spending time with God the same with spending time with any other person.  If you were to meet a friend for lunch or a cup of coffee and spent the whole time thinking about work or the rest of your day, then that time spent together would not be very productive or beneficial.  It would probably be more draining than filling.

Not to mention, your friend would know that you did not want be there by the obvious body language of fooling around with your cell phone, constantly checking the time, fidgeting with your napkin and looking over their shoulder to see what else is going on.

This may even hurt your relationship with that person even more.  But if you make that time spend with your friend a priority it changes everything.  It is a two way conversation, where each of you understands that you have each others full attention.  No longer is it just an obligation to be spending time together but it become a great joy!  It becomes something that you each look forward to.

This is exactly how I have experienced my relationship spending time with God and reading His Word.  When I rush it, making it just another thing to check off of my "To Do List", it is worthless and waisted time.  I honestly might as well not even spend time with Him if it is not a priority.  But when I take time to give God my full attention, allow him to speak to me through his Word, and open myself completely to Him, my emptiness vanishes, and my heart is filled with peace and joy that I believe you can not understand unless you are a Christian and have experienced God's mercy, love, and grace.

If you are a Christian who struggles to make time and be more disciplined at spending time getting in the Word I challenge you to stop what you are doing, chill, and open up your bible.  Let God do His thing and speak to you.  Remember there is nothing you can do to save yourself.  He want's you just as your are and is not condemning.

Get up! Spend some time with Him and have a nice glass of Ice Water for the Soul!  It will refresh you mind, body, and spirit, like nothing else in the entire world.
